Houses with Hope

Mr. Alvarez

People I have met along the way…
From time to time I will be sharing some wonderful people I have met on my “Water for Hope” journey across the United States. George Alvarez is one of them.
George is an amazing young man who was my Uber driver when I arrived in New York City. George told me he was raised by a single mother and grew up very poor, but people along the way mentored him and invested their lives in him. As a result he recently graduated from college with a degree in Mathematics.
In talking with him I found out he is a teacher at a small private school, and an Uber driver at night. I assumed he drove to supplement his teacher’s salary. What he told me will stay with me for the rest of my life.
He shared with me that since people gave so much to him growing up, he wanted to spend his life giving back to others and to model the life and example of Christ. He refuses to take a salary teaching school and lives off what he earns as an Uber driver.
A twenty three year old super sharp young man who has risen to a level of maturity almost non-existent in our “me” absorbed, overindulgent culture. Before I got out of the car I told George that I had truly been in the presence of greatness that night…true greatness…which is loving God, serving others, and blessing “the hound” out of a lady wearing a water jug on her back.
